Document in Field

In your recent "Document in Field" assignment, what was the most difficult challenge to you in "translating" technical information from your field for the comprehension of a non-expert? In what instances in your professional future might you have to perform such a "translation"?

  1. The most difficult challenge in translating technical information was that trying to explain some of the vocab like objects. In my professional future i might use this skill in telling someone what i do for a living.

  2. The challenge for translating was explaining the process in the document. Explaining the vocabulary in the document was a little of a challenge also. I would have to do a translation in my future in explaining my job.

  3. The hardest part for me was trying to define words that I consider fairly basic but acknowledged other people might not. Reminding myself where the line was between a person in and out of a field was tricky, but also useful if I ever had to publish to a general audience or if I had to give a presentation to others.

  4. Agreeing with Kristen, defining terms and concepts that are second knowledge to me and others in my field is difficult. When I had to define these I often used other terms that were likewise specific to my field. Having to explain in common day terms proved very difficult. In my field writing documentation for general users would be a good example. Documentation that is filled with words that are incomprehensible makes useless documentation.

  5. The most difficult thing when translating the technical document was trying to find simplistic terms that corresponded to the actual meaning of technical terms. Some words are only used in metallography such as face center cubic crystal structure and it was hard to describe what those meant.
